Awful performance . Totally butchered. This was the reason I rejected Labric's LP box sets of Vierne and Widor when they first appeared. I still remember my disappointment all these years later. However I am also amazed that he has just turned 103 yrs of age.

Breathtakingly beautiful

Definitive performance. Magnificent! I heard Pierre Cochereau play the dedication recital of the new Ruffatti organ at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco back in the 1970s. I remember him playing Bach’s Passacaglia & Fugue (spectacular!) & improvising an organ symphony on a submitted theme (even more spectacular!) 😎🎹

I agree with Horowitz-- each performer gives his best performance from the way he hears and feels the piece. Some people feel this piece moves at a faster pace; others prefer the composer's own tempo. Take Gershwin, for instance-- he played his works very fast. No one today plays them that way. That's the way he felt them; doesn't mean the tempo is cast in stone. Music is moving, set into motion from the heart of the performer. Each performer gives his heart voice. And that sounds a little different with each person.

Wonderful!! I was fortunate to study with this amazing person and musician. I miss her greatly!

I could wish for a more inviting, and less dry, acoustic than always seems to be audible on Meudon recordings; but this is one pretty awesome performance.

Die meisten gehen wohl heute mit Bluetooth in ihrem Endgerät/Handy richtig um ('Advanced settings' überprüfen, den BBoost selbst vorsichtig verwenden, falls man ihn nutzt). 'Compatibility Mode' der App und 'Sound Field FLAT' oder 'Custom EQ' Ihrer Anlage; so wird die Auswirkung rasch klar: *beeindruckend brillant!*

Can an organist please tell me what is being played at 5:44 - 5:46? I have listened to this piece many times on different organs by different players but don't recognise this sequence of chords. Could this be a different edition of this piece or do my ears deceive me?

My God. What a performance! It's brilliant to hear such a revered organist play this piece with Widor's original intentions. I yearn for interpretations of the original such as this, faithful to the original, rather than the inane, puerile performances at supersonic speeds from technicians which are so unmusical.

Quand l'on connaît cette pièce, sa difficulté, de par ce rythme implacable qui jamais ne faiblit et les changements fréquents de claviers, la dynamique à tenir, jouer cela de cette manière en étant aveugle, c'est juste époustouflant. Quelle maîtrise...

Non, ce n'est pas trop lent, c'est parfait ! Cochereau le jouait également en marquant bien le rythme et les articulations de cette manière ; comment voulez-vous rendre l'intention du compositeur (que Litaize a connu, lui...) en jouant de manière pressée, comme la quasi totalité des "interprétations" ni senties, ni réfléchies ? C'est un final triomphal, pas une toccata.

This was recorded before cochereau had thus organ overhauled, right?

Combinaison super-gagnante : 1/ Ch-M Widor dans cet Allegro célébrissime de sa VI eme symphonie, 2/ le GO Cavaillé-Coll de St Ouen, peut-être le plus magnifique avec St Denis..., St Sulpice St sernin de Toulouse et d'autres encore, et 3/ Pierre Labric, si attaché à son instrument fétiche de St Ouen qu'il connaissait si bien. Cet Allegro de la Vième de Ch-M Widor explose ici, c'est une de mes pièces préférées du grand Ch-M Widor de St Sulpice...

Dupré did a studio version of this piece, although it is available only on LP vinyl (Mercury "Golden Imports".) It is very good, although I bought the recording over Amazon for the Prelude and Fugue in D, BWV 532, which is awesome. You will be wowed by both recordings, performed in Saint Sulpice!

The other movements of Dupre's 1958 recording of Widor's "FIFTH" need to be available in this Internet offering. They are now commercially unavailable, and many libraries do not own them. Young organ students need to learn the importance of tailoring performance SPEED to room acoustics, AND to the mechanical condition of the organ.

The great MASTER of the organ, performing HIS master's famous organ symphonie. Widor, who was titulaire of Saint-Sulpice for 64 years (1870-1934), knew his marvellous instrument and it 's VAST acoustics, and chose his tempi to make his music intelligible. Consult his scores and you will find Widor's metronome markings significantly faster than those he chose for performance at Saint-Sulpice. The same is true for his most famous student, Marcel Dupre.

This tempo allowed me,as the listener, to enjoy every delicious note of this incredibly beautiful music.

The creative freedom in his playing makes this a true Courboin treasure. He had fun!
